I have been trying to fix the problem of the alternator overcharging the battery on my T0-30 and so far I haven't been successful.The tractor had already been converted to 12 volts when I bought it. The alternator was charging the battery at 14.5 volts at low idle and at 17.5 volts at full throtle ( all readings checked with a multimeter) I decided to replace the alternator with a rebuilt one ( GM 10 SI, Model 7127) and the new alternator seemed to word at first, but the volt readings are now the same as those of the original alternator. I checked the wireing and it looks correct ( per John Billingsley 12 volt wiring diagram). Is there something on the tractor that can make the regulator not work( short out, etc)? Is there something that a home mechanic can do to check the operation of the regulator? I bought a rebuilt alternator for my truck one time and it turned out to be bad right out of the box. I guess the same thing could have happened in this case. If I can't check it myself then I probably take it off and carry it to Autozone to have it checked out. Any info is appreciated

Quickest thing is pull the alternator and get it checked. Many places will test it for free hoping to sell you a new one should it prove to be bad.
Is your sense wire (http://www.ytmag.com/articles/artint178.htm) going to the main regulated power lug or does it go else where on the tractor? If it is going to the power lug (I recommend this at least for test purposes) and the output is as you say then your internal regulator may be bad or a brush shorted. You can buy all of the internal parts for these at a very reasonable price at most parts houses.

Thanks for the info. I took the alternator to Advance Auto parts and they tested it and said it was bad.Also,said the same thing at Autozone. The guy I bought it from gave me another one to try. It is wired up liked the article that you refered me to. aslong as the alternator is wired up correctly, is there anything that can cause it to short out other than crossing the wires at the battery?

The main regulated power lug on the back of the alternator is where a lot of people have problems. It is hot even when the tractor is not running. Tools and wrist watches and rings seem to be attracted to this lug as though by magnetism. I know there are buttons and boots that are available (somewhere...) for these but a good gob of some silicon sealer (RTV maybe) will serve until you find something better.
Protect the entire length of the wire coming from this lug so that it doesn't short to ground. Hot manifolds, sharp edges etc. can short out your alternator and battery.
