Hi

My name is Scott I am 17 and come from New Zealand. I have just finished restoring my first trctor. It is a Massey Fergusen TE-A-20. I have recently just purchased a petrol MF 35 and am having a few problems with it, if you scroll down the entries page i am sure you'll see my name many times. I started the 35 up today and it was missing real bad. I have checked the valve clearances 3 times and no adjustments are needed. I am stumped. What can make it miss?. Could there be water in he petrol? It is also real hard to start in the mornings. When you crank it over it gives a poof or two then dies. It does this a few times then fires up and misses and then comes good. I have just about had enough. Any ideas on what is wrong and how I can fix them.

Also I was wondering how many people from New Zealand use this discussion board?

Thank you

Scott Hastie

Just browsing through the archives and I noticed this post. I come from NZ, the Hamilton area. What district are you in?

While I'm no expert on tractor engines, an engine is an engine and I've had plenty of experience with them. Sounds like a possible ignition and or timing problem. Check the plugs to see if they're gapped properly or if there is fouling. If the plugs are fouled, we can look into that too. Inspect the distributor cap for cracks, carbon tracking or corrosion on the pins. Check out the rotor for wear and corrosion. Check the condition of the points & gap. Check the ignition wires with an ohm meter. If you do not have any way to check them, replace them. They're inexpensive and it's an easy way to eliminate that as a problem. Check the timing. That can cause a "poof" or two and hard starting when it isn't correct. Hope this helps :)

Scott, First thing when dealing with a situation like yours is to take one thing ata time and start with the simple things first. Look at the fuel system- is fuel getting into the cylinders? Check your carb adjustments, etc. If you suspect water in the fuel, drain it and replace with good stuff. What about the ignition circuit - is there a decent spark at the plugs? Check each component, ie, points, capacitor, coil, and plugs until you do get a good spark. Have you got a good workshop manual? That should help you go through the checks. Good luck and dont give up, I bet you will find the problem is so obvious you'll kick yourself for not finding it straight away! Pete.

Pete-
Add to your list of things to check, your coil. I had one crack, that caused the same problem.
good luck.
