I own a '52 TO-30. Last week I was bushhogging, and I got a little too close to the ground. I noticed the PTO shaft lever had jumped out of gear. This has never happened before. I re-engaged the PTO, went forward a little more, and noticed the bushhog wasn't working. I looked down at the PTO shaft and noticed it pulled out of the tractor about 2-3 inches and was leaking oil. I unhooked the bushhog and re-engaged the PTO. It would still spin. While it was spinning, I tapped on the end of it with a sledgehammer. PTO shaft slid back into the tractor and worked fine. I need help. What's wrong? I replaced the PTO shaft last year and have had no problems until now. I'm about to sell the tractor out of frustration.

If the TO30 shaft is the same as the TO20 that I have, the only way I see for the shaft to "walk out" is for the large snap ring that retains the bearing (#4) to be missing, or out of it's groove. This would allow the whole shaft and bearing to move outward. There is / should be a step in the shaft that stops it from coming out with out the bearing. See picture above.
