where is the ignition switch mentioned in NCTim's "No fire" post? My TO30 has had similar problems and currently has no power, so I suspect a weak spark and an ignition switch problem.

I am a ham-handed novice at this with few tools at my disposal and am most grateful for any and all advice.

I'm presuming you mean your tractor is running poorly and you suspect a weak spark. A quick way to check for a weak spark is to pull a plug wire off and insert a paper clip or bent piece of wire in the plug boot so it touches the metal clip inside the boot. Turn on the ignition switch and crank the tractor over holding the bent wire about an eigth of an inch from a good ground. You should see a fat, bluish spark if your ignition is up to snuff. If it's orange or yellowish, you need to make it be bluish. Check the primary ignition circuit. (That's the circuit from the battery through the key switch, through the reisitor, if you have one, and to the coil and from the other side of the coil to the distributor. If you have a volt meter and IF the points are closed you should read battery votage (or near battery voltage) through to the points, UNLESS you have a resistor in the circuit. In case of a reistor you'll read battery voltage to the reistor and then less than battery voltage on the other side of the resistor all the way through to the coil and points. Some possible reasons why your voltage will not read properly are a bad key switch, an open resistor, dirty or loose conections, low battery charge, broken wire, or open coil. If the primary circuit checks out OK, check the point gap and check the radial runout of the distributor. These old distributors wear out the bushing and/or the shaft and it can have a lot of wobble which can cause your points to not function properly. Hope this helps. As a word of advice, please explain YOUR problem. Don't refer to someone else;s 'cuz most of us aren't gonna' take the time to search the archives for NCTim's post!

Kevin, there are two switches required to start the tractor, assuming your tractor is like it was orignally, i.e, stock. One is the key switch on the dash. The other is on top of the bellhousing (where the flywheel and clutch reside). It will have two bolts on top, separated by a non metallic barrier. One bolt will have a large cable from the battery (negative post if stock six volt system) and the other will have a cable going to the post on top of the starter. This lower switch is operated by a rod which is pushed by the gear shift lever. This system is easily troubleshooted with a volt and ohm meter. For example, you should have full resistence (1.0 ohms or better) across the two terminals on this switch when you do not have the gear lever pushed forward as to start the tractor. But check it while someone holds the gear lever in full start position and you should have no resistence (zero ohms). You can use the meter to check your battery, which should have about 6.2 - 6.4 volts across the two battery terminals when the tractor is not running. If your problem might be in the key switch that is easily tested with a meter also, as it will have full resistence when off and no resistence when on. Or just use a jumper wire to jump around the two terminals and bypass the switch and see if that helps it start. These tractors should turn over the engine, however, even if this switch is bad. I am assuming from your post that your tractor engine does not even turn over, and if so, your key switch isn't your problem. Another thing that will keep it from turning over is a bad starter. This is fairly easy to test. Drive a 12 volt car up close and get some jumper cables. Make d... sure your tractor is OUT OF GEAR. Block a wheel if necessary. Attach the cables to your car battery. Attach one end of one cable to the top post on the starter. Just touch the other end onto a good ground on the tractor, like a bolt out of the side of the flywheel, etc. The tractor will turn over fast, if the starter is good. If you turn on the key, it should start. It doesn't matter which cable goes onto the starter post, as the starter doesn't care about polarity. However, DO NOT hook up to the tractor battery or any other part of the tractor system, or you could damage the ignition, coil, points, etc. Just go straight to the starter. As you can see, this puts full voltage directly on the starter, and you will know right away that it is the problem if it doesn't respond to that. Long post. Sorry. Hope it helps.
