TO 30 valves

Just bought a TO 30 the other day. It's in great shape and runs well, but like all old machinery it needs to be tinkered with. I was raised on Deere and Farmall, so I don't know anything about Fergusons. Anyway, the exhaust has a slight pop as the tractor runs (at all speeds.) I've done a tune up and set the valve clearance, but it persists. As I said, the tractor starts easily and runs well, and does not smoke at all. I am wondering if the valves are not seating properly and are leaking, or if something else could be causing this. Any ideas?

Have you made sure that the ignition timing is not retarded?

Retarded ignition timing can cause overheating & loss of power - it won"t cause a popping noise in exhaust.

Presumably, as you've done the valve clearances, you would have spotted if it had a broken valve spring. Other likely cause is a bad plug. Would think other electrical faults more likely to cause a misfire than a pop in exhaust. Are there any leaks in the exhaust system? - that could cause that symptom too.

brian;

I think it is the nature of the beasts. We had a TE20 and a TO30 and it seemed there was always a poof to the exhaust. It wasnt as bad under load as it was at idle. I was thinking of installing electronic ignition but retired instead.

Carbon buildup on a valve will cause this symptom. Add a bottle of fuel system cleaner each fillup, that's 10 gallons gas and one full bottle of cleaner. Have you cleaned the fuel sediment bowl? Water can cause this too. This contential engine will purr very smoothly if everything is right. These, along with the other suggestions already offered should solve your popping problem.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Seeing that I have cleaned the entire fuel system, put in new plugs, checked the timing, and checked the manifolds for leaks, I am going to try the fuel additive, and if that does not work I will just go ahead and do a valve job.
