This is what my old seal looks like, straight from the tractor. A "bit" cockeyed with hammer dimples all over it. Hmmmm...think it might be my problem? Maybe it was just a quickie field repair that was never followed up on... Shaft came out as others here said it would: Put the PTO selector in "engine speed" to keep the gear from falling down (thanks, John UK). Undo the three bolts on the retainer plate. My shaft did not want to come, but with a bit of friendly persuasion (I put one of my cheapie screwdrivers through the hole on the PTO shaft and then used my breaker bar to prise first one side and then the other) it comes free. Be prepared, mine came all at once to the distance shown in the photo on the linked gallery. I still have to drive out the old seal and put the new one in. My new seal is not open on any side, it has a couple of rubber scrapers inside of a stamped metal casing. One side of the casing has a lip on the small diameter portion. I guess I'll figure out which side goes where. Incidentally, no one has had a cap on my PTO for donkey's years, and it was packed with old grass, seeds, much, etc.
