I just bought a used boxblade. The leading edge on the sides of the box has been worn away from alot of use. The blade is fine. Should I patch the sides so that the bottom edge is flat, or is it ok to leave the sides like a cresent shape?
I assume the sides were rectangle when it was new. Paul

Paul I do not have a box blade, but I would assume it would be best to replace the worn side blades. Other wise they will continue to wear away into the main part of the box blade. That is if the side blades are replaceable.

The sides are not replaceable, but I could weld some 1/4 " steel to the sides to return the shape to a rectangle. The blade itself is ok. the sides right next to the blades are intact. it is just the lower leading edge of the sides that are worn away.

Paul: The side boards should be flat across the bottom. The front corner should be rounded to keep it from digging in. I have seen boxblades with plates welded on and also ones with cutters welded on. The cutter blades are just a bit of over-kill. The purpose of the side boards is to keep the material from spilling out the sides. They really don't help in cutting anything. It's kind of "whatever floats your boat". Best of luck. Glenn
