Modified air filter

When I bought my T0-35 the air filter material was trashed and rusted, and had no oil in the cup. I modified the system so I could buy cheap paper filters. They really work well. But I'm not familiar with the oil bath filter, should I not have modified the filter system? The oil bath system system just doesn't seem to be that efficient in filtering out dust and dirt. Will it be harmful to the engine?

I have a TO-20 with the oil bath. I replaced the material under the top with one of those choir-girl scouring pads. You'd be surprised how well the oil bath works when properly set up. The amount of crud accumulated on the bottom of the cup is substantial only after cutting grass a couple times. I have heard of people using modified motorcycle air filters mounted directly on the carb. The oil bath might seem like overkill but back in the old days, things were done right.

I also have seen a large amount of crud in the bottom of the cup, so I agree with Nickkk.
The upper cup on my assembly has no type of material at all and never did; did all the TE/TO 20 tractors have this?

They were filled with a very coarse wire mesh, it doesn't need to be particularly fine as how it works is that it tries to draw the oil up out of the bottom canister and into the air intake but as the oil comes up it cant fill the ar intake as there isn't enough oil in there so it drops back into the canister again, but while all this is going on it coats the mesh in oil which catches all the fine dust and grit. The canister was filled to the mark (about half-way up) with the same oil as used in the engine. You changed this oil everyday or in dusty conditions twice daily and as has been said you will be surprised how much dirt gets in there. You should remove the air filter assy. once a month and wash it out to clean the mesh. Using a paper element type filter will change the mixture on the carburettor as the air wont flow through that as easy as the oil type filter and it will most likely be using more fuel than it should.

As far as I know they had a mesh type material in there. I read on this site where some fellas are using those mettalic type brillo pads in place of whatever the orginal was.
