trouble with voltage regulators

I am having trouble with the after market voltage regulators (6 volt pos ground) you can buy. I have tried 3 now, each works for awhile and then stops allowing a charge. The generator provides 15 amps when the field termainal is grounded. None of the regulators has allowed more than 4-5 amps even when the battery was nearly dead.

Often I have to tap the regulator to get it to allow charging, then it may be ok for 10 minutes before it stops allowing a charge again. Tapping again returns them to normal operation for awhile.

I did try running a ground wire from the regulator to the pos batter terminal...no change in operation.

Has anyone else had trouble with these new regulators....or know what the problem is here?

Ray is right on! Always take both the gen and VR to the auto electrical repair shop. Taking just the VR will get nowhere. They will set it up right for you and the price will be as good as any other alternative (in my experience).

I thought it was just me having trouble with these things. I have had identical results with the regulators that I have purchased. Anyone have any good results with a certain brand?

It's not the brand. The generator and voltage regulator should be matched for optimum output and reliability. Any good generator/starter repair shop will perform this for a small charge, just remove both and take them to the shop. The shop can set them up for factory charging rate or whatever you specify. I had mine set for maximum charging because of infrequent use and when I brushogged this spring my regulator quit. I suspect burned points in the regulator is the problem, from too much current. I've gotta go back and have them set to factory specs. BTW, regulators at the rebulid shop are usually less $ than other places.
