My "51 TO-20 keeps busting the nose cone of the starter, exact same place and break X 2. What is wrong...timing? It was welded once before so it's been a chronic problem. Have 12 volt everything and worked well for several months. Don

After changing to 12 volt I broke two or three starter nose cones. Changed back to 6 volt and never broke another one. It seemed to me like the 12 volt just made the starter hit too hard.
I didn"t really have a good reason for changing to 12 volt in the first place other than just doing it.

Don.

Had that problem also. Nose cone broke, had it welded. Several months later it broke again. Went to my favorite mechanic and he found a nose cone under a bench. Found out it could be timmimg. Had a friend help and we timed it by the book. I&T manual. Shimmed out starter by making shims from a pop can. Had no trouble after that.

Re: Nose cone on starter fix it in reply to steveormary, 07-17-2005 21:09:13
I have encountered this many times over and over. The starter should have a groove cut around on the armature shaft and a ring that is about 3/4 around this prevents the armature slamming into the front nose some times this groove is so far worn down you cannt see it or barely . This stops the bendix traveling to far and into the front nose . You should see if not there the front wearing into the bushing and casting of the housing once it gets too far worn then the bendix keeps bumping the casting too hard. either replace the armature or have remachined. have tried putting a fiber washer works for a while but not a good fix. Replacing the front nose works also for a while because bushing and everything is new and takes wear again but usually breaks again the replacement nose.I have found this type ring at NAPA got to ask for bendix ring or something like this.
