Howdy, all.
Thanks for the great forum-- I've learned a lot just reading the archives. I just bought a fixer-up'er TO-30 (with MF 35 paint and stickers no less!) and my first order of business is going to be replacing the starter. What would you guys recommend-- having a shop rebuild it, or buy one from a salvage place? Does anyone have any recommendations for parts yards or rebuilders? I'm anxious to get the starter replaced so that I can get on with other tasks. Thanks!

I would take it to a good auto electrical shop, one that works on old cars as well as new, and one that sometimes sees tractor parts like 6 volt generators, etc., come thru the door. Ask them if it should be fixed or rebuilt. My guess is they will have a rebuilt one, or can get one, for about the same price as rebuilding yours. They will want yours as trade plus dollars, of course. I know the shop I use here in Richmond would give you that option.

Sorry, guys. I left out all the important details. That's what I get for posting around bedtime. The stator and rotor coils are completely wrecked and the brushes and holders are literally ground to dust. When I pulled the rotor, shaft, bearings, and drive out of the case, the rest came pouring out in the form of powder and little bits of copper. Pretty impressive damage, really.

I had mine (FE 35) rebuilt at an auto elec. shop last year for less than $30. If you go the junk yard route you'll probably have to get that one rebuilt anyway. Good luck with your tractor. Ain't they fun!. Cosmo

Do you know that the starter has to be replaced? It may only need cleaning and a set of brushes. Or the cable post could be twisted apart on the inside. If a new starter is necessary, then I would try NAPA or the local MF dealer. I am, however, a novice here and some of the other guys here can give other options I'm sure. RonW
