Some of these starters need spacing away from the flywheel or it can strike the nose of the starter. As the engine gets worn and the main bearings and thrust washers get some play, it allows the crank, with the flywheel to move forwards and back; and if they are close it will strike the nose. They give a clearance of 1.281"/32.54mm for the later Standard engines but as the starter is the same it should apply to the early ones too. the clearance is measured from the front of the starter ring on the flywheel to the face of the cylinder block where the starter mounts.

Thanks John, GLAD to know you are safe. I had the lower end rebuild and that may explain what happened. I am not sure where you are talking about the placement of the spacer. Can you give this Texas a little more info. The generator shop is looking for another nose piece or they may have to braze it back together. Should know by Wednesday what the course of action will be. Gene

Hi Gene, The spacer fits between the starter and the cylinder block, all it does is move the position between the starter pinion and the flywheel gear. You will realise that unless this is more or less correct then the flywheel could catch the nose of the starter.

I have a TO-30 and had problems with the starter nose breaking. I won't go into all the details, but after a lot of hassle, I ended up buying a complete used starter from Pittsburg Tractor in Pittsburg, Texas. It was $75 plus the freight, $12.50 (I don't know where you live, so freight could be a factor), which made the entire deal less expensive than just buying a nose piece. I know I'm talking TO30 vs. your TO20, but you might give them a call. It's worked great for about a year now, and I wish I'd just have bought it to begin with. I know when you buy used, you never know; but I've been very happy with this one. Check your local part sources; and if they can't help, let me know if you need Pittsburg Tractor's phone # and I'll look it up.

there is a starter on ebay item # 7529456958. it is for a TO30 but they are the same,what broke the original?, do you notice it hitting the ring gear hard or anything unusual,let us know

The starter nose cone broke on my TO-30. I had it welded. Broke again. My favorite mechanic found a nose cone underneeth his work bench. Picked up on this board to check timming. My pro-
fessional assistant and I timed it by the book. I&T manual. Had no more trouble after that,so make sure you are properly timed.
