Missing springs in oil pan

Well after a 22 year rest "my new" TO20 is back on her feet again. In the process of mucking out the oil pan and replacing the cam I thought it was unusual that the can over the screen for the oil filter just sits there. I just got my parts manual and discovered that there are 2 felt washers, and a spring missing. I guess I had better get them and install them as I imagine the parts bouncing around in there.

The question I have is, does the open end of the "screen can" face down as well?

Seems like a poor filter system with the oil inlet between the screen, and the filter, basically free to select between the filtered oil that has already passed thru the engine and then the filter, and the unfiltered oil in the pan that comes through the screen only. Of course there is the argument that the tractor still runs fine 50 years later....

Mark.. I just had all that stuff out on my TO last week myself. That spring can be easily obtained for a couple bucks from a AGCO (Massey) dealer.
The "screen can" faces with the open end down so as to form a cover over the screen. The manual calls it a "screen cover". The spring goes between the top of the cover, and a flat stop machined in the oil return line coming from the center bearing.
The filter screen and filter are slightly longer than the cover, thus pushing against that spring, which holds the screen and filter seated down against the bottom of the "hand hole cover", the big plate you remove to access all that stuff.

When I bought my TO, I found the screen and cover were installed upside down by the prev. owner. Couldn't even get them out, had to drop the pan to get them out. Probably < 30% of the oil is actually filtered thru the filter in a given pass, since your oil is re-cycled thru the engine, it all gets filtered sooner or later. These old engines are a simpler design than modern engines so it isn't a big deal. It IS important to make sure your screen in installed correctly, your oil pump can't pass any solid particulates larger than a few thous. inch. As for the felt washers, didn't have any in my TO when I got it. Never installed any, don't know what they look like, or exactly why they are suppose do... to keep particulates from splashing in around the holes in the screen I would guess. Would like to hear from some other guys on the felt washers.

Thanks,
So that I am sure. I do not remember if the screen was open on one end, or both, but if one, does the opening go down against the oil pan, or up against the can?

As for the washers, they are in the parts manual, and look like they go above the screen cover.

oil screen goes in with the open end facing down so you can remove/install the oil filter easily.

That is the way I put it, but again it seemed like it should be the other way to make sure the oil goes through the screen, and not between the pan and the screen. If the opening was actually round that screen would probably come out, but somebody ran over something making the hole in the pan a little oblong.

I ordered the spring, but the washers are no longer available, so I guess we will never know about them.

Thanks for all your help.

Mark
