In the near future Iam going to replace the hydraulic lift cover on my TO20 (old one has a crack).AT the same time Iam going to replace the rear wheel seals(sure seals), pto bearing and seal, and possibly the brakes.QUESTIONS:How do I check the hydraulic cylinder, piston and which piston is better to use, rings or o ring style. What else should I look at or replace as long as Iam getting my hands dirty?

Thanks for the help in advance

You are embarking on the same adventure I did a couple of years ago. I changed out my axle bearings, seals, brakes, pto bearings, and pto seals, along with other small items. If you need advice on specifics just e-mail me at: [email protected] or ask in this forum and I will try to respond. As to your question about the hydraulic cylinder piston with the O-rings, a lot of dealers encourage getting them because they don't wear on the cylinder walls and they apparently hold more pressure. I think they are the same size for the Fergusons as they are for the Fords. You said you had a crack in the cylinder. I had one in the support lug for the cylinder and had it welded with a cast iron welding rod. That whole cylinder assembly isn't terribly expensive, however if the crack is bad.
You need to check your pump over also. All the water sludge accumulates around it and can restrict the free flow of oil around the pump. You might also want to look at the control valve at the pump. One word of advice when removing the top. First, remove the side plates and reach in and VERY CAREFULLY spread the forks of the control rod coming from the cylinder area. The forks are attached to the delicate little control valve and it will snap like a match stick (trust me on this).

Keith again thanks for the reply. It sounds like we are or have worked on the same tractor. Next month is "THE REBUILD" ,seals, brakes, bearings, gaskets, lift cover and other expensive stuff. Maybe if I keep my head I'll take pictures and post the results.
