jeff
make sure you got a good spark if you hold one of your plug leads close to the body of the tractor while cranking, if no spark then work back from the coil to the ignition switch checking to make sure you put everything back properly ,let us know
good luck
Danny

Assuming you do in fact have a good spark as Danny outlined, shut off the gas at the sediment bowl, remove spark plugs, and crank the engine a little every few hours to rid the engine of any flooding in the cylinders. When you think all the gas has evaporated from the cylinders, reinstall plugs, use a small amount of starting fluid in the air intake and attempt to start. If it starts you know the carb is the broblem.

Hi Jeff,
Backfiring normally is a timing problem, not carb.
Did you take your distributor out somewhere along the line?
