Ok,I have been doing some "figuring" of how to overcome the condensation problem and freezing the pump in winter. It is common to have a large quantity of water come out when the tranney is drained and in PA, freezing is a concern of mine. Therefore, I have an idea thay maybe you guys have not heard of or already tried. Obviously, the condensation/water is not going to disappear, so why not drain just the water from the system? Seeing how the water is heavier, if the three tranney drain plugs were tapped and a fitting similarly used on the coolant system were installed within the drain plugs, you could occasionally open them up and allow the water to drain until you see fluid come out and re-close them. Has anybody done this or considered it? I thing I may try it.

The other thing you can do is slowly open the drain plugs. The water will wix and flow around the threads before the plug is fully removed. Then, as you said, when you start to see trans. oil close the plug. I just did this on my TE-20 last weekend. Only got a thimble full after two years of it sitting out.

I do not believe in the condensation theory, I believe the water is getting in by other methods.

I had a JD 435D and it had a horrible problem with condensation as it sat out side (under a tarp) in an area with 80 inches of rainfall per year. I put a street "L" pipe fitting with a bushing and 1/4" plug and used that to draw water off at the bottom of the transmission. It worked. I could draw off a relatively small quantity through the small hole and not have a gush of water and fluids come out. Since the fluid wa cool and viscous, you couldn't get much of it out that small of a hole but the water came out fine.

The downside of putting anything that is less substantial than the drainplug under the tractor becomes painfully obvious when it gets cracked or broken. Then, worse if we don't notice it in time and there's more damage from lack of lubricant. Famous last words? "I'll be careful and make sure that doesn't happen." Have fun; be safe.

Have you checked where the water is getting in to the transmission, it won't all be condensation if as you say there are large amounts, Usual places are the rubber boot at the bottom of the transmission lever, it meeds to be a good fit and not damaged in any way. The other place is the felt seal under the triangular plate under the main Control Spring at the back of the seat. To change this you need to remove the Spring but no doubt it will be seized up after all this time so it will be necessary to remove the top cover so you can hold the rod through the spring to stop it turning while you adjust it. If you try to adjust it without holding it you will destroy the Control Fork. To remove the top cover you need to detach the Control Valve first or you will break it. If you need information, then email me at:-

tell me what you are going to do and what you need and I will send it to you.

I noticed a reference to a shifter boot; my TE 20 doesn't have one. I guess I never knew 'till now that it should. Are they available?
Thanks.

A TE tractor doesn't have one, only the TO tractors have them and not all of those apparently. The TE tractors had an upside down steel cup fitted to them which was fine while they were new with no wear on the lever. It is possible to fit one though and Sparex do a couple that they recommend to fit. and the are S40821 or S40822 and they relate to MF part numbers 180579M3 and 520858M1.

Thanks, John.
Problem is, last time I contacted Sparex, they answered that they are wholesale only, so I'd have to go to an MF dealer.
Do you know a way to buy direct from Sparex?
(Dealers tend to be 'pricey', at least here in the U.S.)
I appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share it with others.
Regards,
Dennis

Welll, I do not have a problem with the gaskets or boot. My tractor is kept in the barn out of weather at all times. when I say large amounts of water, I mean about 2 measuring cups full but this seems like a good bit to me especally when there shouldn"t be any. Thanks for the help though.
