I found my hydro level to be over full. I drained about a gallon and did not see any sign of water (milky looking GL1) in what came out. Am I correct that GL1 floats on water as regular oil? The GL1 apears to be clean and color maybe on the dark side having not seen any GL1 fron the jug/can. Any ideas or suggestions as to a potential problem? Gene

The water in your system is mixed with the oil to create that milky emulsion, you wont find the water separate from the oil as there wont be any great amount in there. The water gets in at two places, the main transmission lever through a damaged rubber boot and through the felt seal under the triangular plate which is under the main Control Spring for the hydraulics at the back of the seat. To replace the felt seal will most likely require the Hydraulic Top cover removing from the tractor as the adjustment for the spring will no doubt be seized up after all this time and to try to unscrew it will damage the Control Fork inside, so the top has to come off so you can hold the rod that runs through the Control Spring while you remove the end yoke.If you do need information on how to remove the top cover and and the spring adjustment, email me at:- fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk
and tell me exactly what you need or what you are trying to do. Don't try to remove the top cover unless you know what you are doing as you could damage the Control Fork or the Valve.

Gene I forgot to mention that the TO-20 does not have the inter axle seals like the TO-30 but they can be added with an inter seal kit. The GL-1 gear oil is a dark oil and will show up clear on the dip stick. It don't take very much water to turn it milky if the tractor is being used.

It don't have to be over filled to get into the brake drums if your axle seals are bad unless the tractor stays level all the time and never gets on a hill. My TO-30 has been a little over full for about 4 months since I replaced all the axle seals and I drilled and tapped fitting holes and filled the axle bearing cavity with GL-1 90w so I don't worry about lubrication to the bearings. Have not had any problems with it at all. I work this tractor two to four hours a day digging a water pond and at 15 feet deep I do go up and down hills with the 24" dirt scoop.

Also, did read in one of the posts that an overfull system could/would show up in leaking axle seals?
