TO20 mystery lever

Since the tractor does not run yet I can't "just try it". This lever is up fairly high on the left side of the transmission (if you are sitting on the tractor) near the front. It is bent like an "L" to clear the steering linkage. Not shown in the operators manual that I can find. Maybe a hi/low range?

A picture of a Sherman shifter on a TO-30. I've no idea if this location is the Ford or Ferguson version...

Where is yours and do you have the original starter (with the shift lever) system?

That is the lever. Looks more like mine in grey and dirt.

I guess I still have the original starter. It looks like the starter switch is actuated by moving the shifter to the far right and forward?

Boy, I am out of my element here as I am / was an 8N guy.

Probably a combination Sherman Hi/Lo since they were the most popular giving you 12 forward speeds and 3 reverse... shift would have three positions... Hi/normal/lo.. But it could also be just Hi/normal or Lo/normal since there were step up and step down versions. They were official (on the Ford parts lists) Ford dealer installed options. It never appeared on a Ferguson parts list as far as I know, but the Ford version could (and was) dealer installed if you gave up the "start with the shifter" option due to interference. There were some combo's specifically made for the Ferguson (also dealer installed)that allowed you to keep the starter arrangemnt stock. The Shifter position has been moved (farther back, I think) to clear the starter linkage inside the bell housing..

Mark, That sounds like the Hi/Low range selector for the transmission on certain Ford N series tractors (can"t remember which N series, alzhiemers kicking in I guess). I remember it from an old N series my dad had when I was a kid, but I could be wrong. JohnUK is the man when it comes to Ferguson tractors.

I think that the question has been answered fully now. We never had the Sherman reduction/overdrive here in the UK, mores the pity, the nearest we came to it was the Howard reduction box that was used with the Rotovator, very late on we had the Ferguson Epicyclic reduction box that also gave the TE20 live PTO which was very useful. Glad to see that you have finally seen the light Mark and got a proper tractor now...John
