Got my TO-20 about a month ago, serial #TO-25110 When I got it the pto could be engaged and disengaded, but the lift would not work, The oil had some water in it and the dip stick showed it over full to the top of the stick. I drained all the oil out of the front 2 plugs and I could turn the pto shaft and the lift would raise, Finished draining all 3 plugs and let it sit overnight. Put in 5 gallons of new 90wt. g1 oil, could turn the pto and the lift works, started the engine and now I cannot get the pto to engage. the shaft seems to have about 1/4 inch end play, but it only will grind as it tries to engage? Also has anybody changed the throttle lingage from govenor control to carburetor control like the 8n has?

If it is grinding as you try to put the PTO in gear then the clutch is still driving the gearbox, perhaps the pedal clearance may need adjusting, should be 3/8" under the footrest and the pedal.The end play in the shaft may mean that a bearing is worn or that a circlip is not in its groove. It should still engage the drive though. Why would you want to change from a governor on a tractor, is it that you can't set it up, I have the instructions for doing that if you need them.

Just a thought, but are you making sure that the clutch is in when trying to engage the pto. Sometimes it's the obvious/little things we overlook, or at least I do.

I have checked and reset the cluch lingage to speck and have tried to engage the pto with the tractor in gear and it still will not engage. As to the throttle linkage the 1952 8n I had back in 1975 had the throttle hooked to the carburetor and a link to the governor and it was very responsive as to throttle control. The To20 linkage to the governor then the carburetor seems not to be as sensitve a control, I will have to go over the linkage and check it for ware and see if I can get it back the way it is dsigned.
