TO-20 won't start

Started it to move it but ran out of gas (fooled by full sediment bowl!). Has always fired right up, but after filling tank, won"t start. Only spits once after sitting a while. Any suggestions?

I acquired this '49 three weeks ago and still learning.

just want to give m y 2 cents, you may have to let the air out of the sediment bowl, after refilling it, just loosen the bail, and let gas run out then tighten back up, it sort of gets air locked in there sometimes,pat

I'll give it a go. By "bail", you mean the bowl drain plug at the bottom of the carb?

well actually I was refering to the sediment bowl bail, the 1/2 ring that holds the bowl onto the assembly. it will have a nut sort of device that holds the bowl onto the assy.with the valve turned on so gas will flow. just loosen the nut assy pull the bowl down a little untill gas begins to flow out, then tighten the screw back up,, some of the sediment bowls have a plug on the reverse side of the shut off on the sediment bowl, you can loosen that as well but sometimes it is hard to get to,pat

OK, now that makes sense!

Since the tractor is 50 miles from where I live it took a while to get someone to check it out. Had the neighbor drain the carb per your suggestion, and after a bit of nothing then the fuel ran. closed it up and she started right up!

You may have drawn all the crap out of the fuel tank into the little filter in the elbow on the main feed line at the carb. Check that the filter in the tank above the sediment bowl is clean and ok and the one in the top of the sediment bowl, remove the glass bowl to get at it.

just to add to what John said ,take out the drain plug in bottom of carb and make sure you get a steady stream of gasoline,you can check this for rust particles ,maybe time to reseal the tank

There is a fuel filter between the sediment bowl and the carb, and it is feeding through this, but i'll try the drain plug in the bottom of the carb; didn't know there was one!
