I"ve got a To20 that I bought about 2 years ago. I love the little tractor but I am having a problem that I can"t figure out. Every year I tune it up and the thing runs great. This year I tuned it up and had 0 problems for about 2 months. Then last week it started to miss (had a poping sound at full throttle) I tuned it up again thinking that was the problem. It didn"t help. I think it is missing on the third plug (almost like it"s jumped time...only it"s just the third cylinder) When I pull the plug wire off it will not "pop". But when I plug it back up it runs worse. Anybody got any suggestions??

Remove valve cover and check clearances and see if a pin through a valve has come out or a cap has come adrift.

John, do you have any idea why the Continental engines use those little caps on the top of the valves? I have never seen them before on any engine I worked on except my Z129.

Hi Jerry, The Standard diesels have them too it was to allow the valves to rotate freely so they would wear and seat more evenly and to help prevent sticking.

But my TO-30 only has Roto-Caps on the exhaust valves. It has those pesky caps on the intake valves also. Besides, the caps aren't necessary for the rotation.

It was only the exhaust valves that required the Roto-caps, but that is why they had them, to assist the rotation of the valves. Very often if you look at valves that don't have these caps you will find them marked straight across where the rocker has been rubbing all the time and they haven't turned at all.It is a lot harder for the valve to turn without a cap as the full pressure of the rocker is pressing down on the end of the valve stem just at the time they should be turning,i.e. when the valve is open.

Thanks for your help. It was just as you described. A cap came off. I put is back own and tighten the rocker arm. I ran the tractor all day and had no problem's. Thanks for your help.

I fill that I should set my valves to make sure that I do not have this problem again. Does anybody know what the gap should be?

No its not a stupid question at all. turn the engine and get the valves on number four cylinder "rocking", at this point the valves on number one cylinder will be closed and you can now set them, continue with this setting the opposite cylinder to the ones that have the valves "rocking" (i.e. just at the point one closes as the other opens) number 1 and set 4, number 2 and set 3, number 3 and set 2, number 4 and set 1. hope you can follow that, sounds confusing but it isn't really once you get to it.

The clearance is 0.013" Hot or 0.015" Cold. Manual recommends adjustment hot and running. Glad you found the problem.

this may sound like a stupid question but, what's the best way to find top dead center? (i'm assuming this is the position I should set the valves in) I have adjusted valves on motorcycles and quads and they are easy to find.

Are you sure that the wires are hooked up right? The firing order is 1-3-4-2. By what you described, it sounds like that might be it. Check your timing. Initial timing for the TO-20 is 7 degrees BTDC at 400 rpm. If the advance is working properly, the timing at 2000 rpm should be 31 degrees BTDC. Make sure that your plug wires are fuly seated in the distributor cap. If you have a conventional (non-electronic) ignition, check your points (0.022") Make all these checks one at a time then start it up to see if the problem cleared. If it did, the last thing you fixed was the culprit.

I tuned it up earlier in the year. I changed points, plugs, cap, wires, and rotor. The problem started about two months later. I really thought it had burnt up the points. I replaced the points and plugs and that didn't help. I replaced the cap and rotor..that didn't help. Yesterday I replaced the wires. Nothing seems to help. I will double check my firing order today. Like I said..it is firing on the 3rd cyclinder but it runs better when I pull the plug wire off. I get a real light poping sound through the air cleaner when this plug is hooked up. When I unplug it the sound goes away and the tractor runs better. I know it sounds like timing or firing order..but why is it just one cyclinder?

Could be a stuck/bad intake valve? I would do a compression test at this point to check if the 3rd cylinder has a problem.
