Hello again guys,
Just want to let you know how I made out after my "no charge post".
I did check the A terminal on the generator to make sure it was polarized. All ok there.
Next, connected the F terminal to ground and then saw 30 amps on the amp meter and 7.2 volts across the battery. Decreasing to 6.9 v after a few minutes. Good generator. After disconecting the F terminal the amps went to zero and volts across batt to 6.2 volts.
Next, i called my auto electric shop where I got the VR, and he told me how to adjust the voltage. Worked great, and got the voltage acrossed the batt up to 6.8 volts. I would still like to see 7 to 7.2. At this setting I am now seeing about 20 amps on the amp meter. At working rpm. Does this sound good to you?.

Any comments appreaciated. And thanks for all the help.

make sure the regulator he gave you cross references to the # that came with the TO tractors , these are Delco Remy model #1118308 or 1118291 also make sure it is for a POS ground installation i seem to remember some mixups in the past ,your charge rate is too high as there is almost no load on these circuits unless you got a lot of lights let us know that way we all learn

Since I am having the same problem, how do you adjust the regulator?

By the way, if you are getting a continous 20 amp charge, that is way too much for long term use. It may show that for a couple seconds after starting, but it should drop to about 1 or 2 amps very soon. A continuous high charge will destroy your battery.

Hello Zipp,

Thanks for the feedback. On adjusting the regulator. With the two coils, look for the one with the points "closed". Don't touch the one with the points open. There is a small spring that hold tension on the closed points, take a small needle nose and bend the tab slightly to increase spring pressure as you watch the volt meter. Works good. As I said, I got mine up to 6.9 volts, I wanted 7.2, but the amp meter shows 20 amps. Like you said, I think that is way too much. Maybe it will come down once the batt is charged. Will have to look into it further. Let me know how you made out.

Did you adjust the old one that came on the tractor originally, or one of the new replacements that are available?

I have used both old one and two new replacements, and both do the same thing. They charge for a day or two, then stop no matter how low the battery is.

Hello Zip,

The VR I used was a new replacement 6v pos ground. But not sure if it is the correct piece because of the high amperage. I will keep working on it and let you know.

After the battery is fully charged, you'll see the voltage come up.
