I am having trouble with the clutch on my TO-35. Clutch is properly adjusted but gears grind. If I set it to low idle I can get it into gear but even with the clutch fully depressed it wants to ease forward (or backward if in reverse). The tractor has a 2 stage clutch and I can feel each stage. Thinking I wasn"t able to depress the clutch far enough, I even malasjusted the clutch to zero clearance between the pedal and the stop. No help. Readjusted to correct clearance. Had a similar problelm last year for one day and then it seemed ok until recently.

If you have had it apart it is possible that the main drive plate is buckled and this is causing it to drive. Obviously something like this is happening, it isn't separating enough to free the plate. Did you check if the clutch lever pivot pins were worn, they usually are, if they are this reduces the amount of movement available to free the main plate again allowing it to continue driving. Did you set the levers to the correct height before reassembly of the tractor.

Never had it apart. Don't think the previous owner did, either. He rebuilt the engine but did not do any thing to the clutch. Got a funny felling the clutch needs serviced. Not looking forward to it, though. Thanks for the reply, John.

If as you say the tractor has not been apart then it could be that the main drive plate is sticking on the drive shaft into the gearbox due to combination of a little oil and lots of dust from the friction material, this will need cleaning off to help the plate move freely again. Hello.

From your description, the problem is consistent with the lining on the plate buckling or flaking, causing the dragging. It doesn't take much added friction to cause the problem.

We've had the problem after repair, but that was caused by 1) clutch runout or wobble in a rebuilt disk, and 2) distortion in the center hub caused by trying to pull the tractor together with the bell housing bolts instead of allowing the splines to align properly.

It punched the disk forward allowing the hub projection to rub slightly on the pilot bearing, and that drag was enough to cause grinding.

Sounds like a split coming up. Not difficult - proceed carefully. and check the replacement disk for runout.
