No Charge

Hello guys, I need some help with the charging system on my 52 TO30. Still 6 volts. After replacing the regulator, checking the generator, and cleaning all the connections, I can't get and charge at the battery during normal running. It shows 6.2 volts at normal rpm. After a full day of use mowing, the battery will barely start the tractor. Starts great with a full charge. Any ideas? Please.

I"d be looking for 7 to 7.4 volts output, otherwise the battery will never achieve full charge.

first thing ,polarize the generator ,with the tractor off touch a piece of wire from the A terminal on the generator to a battery source,the Neg post of thge battery is good if you are still hooked up Pos ground, you will get a spark and just a quick touch is all you need ,
if that dosent work ground the F terminal on the generator and measure the output of A terminal on the generator, with the tractor running let us know the readings if any, lastly make sure the regulator and the generator are grounded properly

Ron, just to add to what Dan said.

Definitely polarize your generator first.

Your V.R. regulates generator output by regulating resistance between the generator's (F) terminal to ground. Double check the V.R. mounting bolt that grounds it to your tractor frame to make sure it is clean. Might want to check continuity between your regulator ground bolt and the main ground lug on the back of your dash.

Grounding the F terminal on your generator, like Dan says, will force your generator to full output. You should get ~6.8 volts output with a good working generator at ~1/2 throttle.

There are a lot of cheap V.Regulators out there. If your charge system checks out going all the above... might just have a crappy V.Regulator. I've been thru 3 regulators in 3 years.... on one tractor!

Hello again guys,
Just want to let you know how I made out after my "no charge post".
I did check the A terminal on the generator to make sure it was polarized. All ok there.
Next, connected the F terminal to ground and then saw 30 amps on the amp meter and 7.2 volts across the battery. Decreasing to 6.9 v after a few minutes. Good generator. After disconecting the F terminal the amps went to zero and volts across batt to 6.2 volts.
Next, i called my auto electric shop where I got the VR, and he told me how to adjust the voltage. Worked great, and got the voltage acrossed the batt up to 6.8 volts. I would still like to see 7 to 7.2. At this setting I am now seeing about 20 amps on the amp meter. At working rpm. Does this sound good to you?.

Any comments appreaciated. And thanks for all the help.

I have experienced the same problem with VRs in reply to gshadel, 06-13-2005 12:21:55

I am on my third one now, and I know my generator charges. Grounding F post gives 15 amps on the meter, and turning lights on with grounded F still gives a 3 amps.

I put these things on, they last a week or two and then don't charge. Sometimes flicking the lights on and off got them to charge. This also happened with an original regulator.

So I am stumped...what is wrong with these things?
