should a to-30 have a rubber gear shifter lever cover? My tractor has a a metal 1 and i am not sure if the rubber 1 goes over the metal?

Yeah, mine has a metal one too, I just thought that was how it was supposed to be. But mine does not have a cotter key, it is just a snug fit. I often thought it needed a rubber one too... thanks for asking, now I know. I keep mine covered because when I bought the tractor the gearbox was full of water and I thought this was a likely source.

My TO-20 also has a metal cover. I know that is the original cover and that there was never a rubber cover over it. I think that it is a good idea and do not see how water could get by it and into the transmission, granted it is not a tight seal but it is shaped like and completely covers the shift lever boss. I have seen more metal covers than rubber covers on these tractors, and have always wondered why there was a difference. I actually like the looks of the metal cover better than the rubber one.

In my parts list it only shows the rubber cover so perhaps they did fit the metal one like the TE20 tractor and found it leaked and then changed it to the rubber type which to my mind is better if it is kept in good condition. There is another place that the tractor leaks into the gearbox/transmission and that is through a felt seal that the sensing plunger which runs through the middle of the Control Spring at the back of the seat sits on, it is under the triangular plate. This felt seal wears and goes hard over the years.

John, Thanks so much for pointing this out... I keep my shifter taped or covered because I don't yet have covered storage for my tractor. I had to flush the hydralics once when I bought the tractor, so I don't want contaimination again. I will make it a point to check this seal too. Is this also the spring that you talk about adjusting to help control the lift?

Yes that is the one, the only problem is that most likely it is seized up by now due to not being adjusted very often, originally they said you needed to adjust or at least move the yoke on the rod every few months so it wouldn't seize,But the tractors have been around so long and not a lot of the original owners have them so the present owners don't know about this. If you need to adjust it or take the spring off to replace the seal you need to be aware of the Control Fork being attached to the Control Valve, this has to be disconnected before you try to remove the Lift Cover or you will break it. You will also damage beyond repair the Control Fork if you try to unscrew the Yoke on the Spring as it will try to twist it as it was only made from pressed steel, which was perfectly adequate for the job, it will now be almost rusted away so it wont stand any abuse. You do need to remove the Top Cover to adjust the Spring now so you can hold the rod on the inside to prevent it turning. If you need more on this email me at :-

there is another boot you can use as an alternative, 520858M1 . If you can fit a rubber boot over the top of the metal one you say you have now then it will be better, just make sure that it is a good seal around the bottom at the gearbox to keep the water out. Are you sure it has a metal one and that you are not getting mixed up with the ball that the lever pivots on, the rubber one could have rotted away and that would be underneath.

The metal one that is on the tractor is a cover and not the ball that the lever piviots on. The metal cover looks factory and its held on with a cotter pin through the tapered are at the top of metal cover through the shifter rod. Do you think I should orderthe rubber boot and slide it over the metal one?

If you can get the boot to fit over the metal one then I would get one as it will make a much better seal. It doesn't show a metal cover in my list, the TE20 series had one though and that leaked too with age. Maybe you can remove the metal one if it is only held with a split pin like you say, it may be better like that, just try it and see which is best, you have nothing to lose.(only the leak)
