Yesterday I brought home this TO-20 #12,669. Lovely machine that runs very nice. However... someone left the ignition on and burnt up the coil and primary wiring on the first day. sigh. It's had a 12v conversion, so I assume a standard 12v coil is the replacement? I also found the battery carrier is somewhat rusted and the battery is secured with a bungee-cord! Can anyone suggest a replacement/alternate way to better secure the battery? This is my first outing with a tractor, my other old vehicles all have only two wheels.

thanks - mark

NAPA has a regular 12 V coil and the part number IC14-SB ($13.99) that will work in your 12V system. You might have had a 6 volt coil without a ballast resistor in the primary circuit that probably caused the overheat and failure of the coil and burned the primary wire. Make sure you don't have any shorts in that part of the primary circuit.

Jerry,

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I'd picked up a 12v coil that had run over $30, since I haven't installed it yet I'll look for the one you suggested at NAPA. Is that what the resistor (internal vs external) is all about? To prevent cooking the coil when the ignition is left on?

It's primary purpose is to limit the current through the coil all the time the engine is running to prevent coil failure via overheating. Only if your points are closed with the key is left on will there be a problem and there will likely be a problem with a 12 v coil also. It'll just take a while longer to fry a coil with an internal resistor. So turn that key OFF!

Any good 12v coil, internally resisted, will work, that is if you dont have a resistor wired in. Battery boxes seem to be not that easy. Mine is plywood held up by 2 2x4s secured with...you guessed it, a bunjie cord. Good luck, have fun!!! Mike

I assume if there is not a visible resister, I should go with an internally resisted coil. I picked one up but when I took it out of the box it said "must be used with external resistor"

and I've already cut a sheet of plywood, 2x4 too thick for this battery, wouldn't be able to close the lid... now, for a longer bunjie cord!
