It doesn"t sound like you have a TO35, but something earlier, 30 etc; those had the starter switch controlled by the shifter. A TO35 would have a 3-speed with another shifter along side of it for high and low ranage for 6 forward speeds and 2 reverse. Is there a Continental Motors tag on the engine, what model engine is it? A TO35 gas was usually a Z134.

S was for starting older Ferguson tractors. Made sure you were out of gear using the gear shift to push the starter button.

The oil bath air cleaner was the REGULAR air cleaner when your tractor was built.

By the mid 60s most tractor makers converted to dry type air cleaners, and some made conversion kits. There might an air cleaner housing from a later tractor that can be made to fit.

Many older tractors run the hydraulic pump on the PTO shaft and if old enough the PTO shaft only turns when the clutch is released whether the transmission is in gear or not. The PTO shaft is an extension of the transmission intermediate shaft so the PTO only works with that shaft is turning. If brush hogging you must use an overruning clutch because pushing in the clutch won't stop the tractor that then is pushed by the spinning blade.

First you need to identify the tractor for sure, then find an operator's manual, and maybe a shop manual, then you can know what it needs without getting conflicting advice from commentors not knowing what tractor you have.

The serial number may not help identify the model. Many manufacturers started a new serial number sequence for each model.

But the serial number tag should include the model.
