sediment bowl tape needed?

Hello, I purchased a new sediment bowl since my old one leaked. Do I need to put anything on the threads that go into the tank or do I just screw it on? The old one did"t have anything on the threads, but then this may be why it leaked. I was thinking of teflon tape, but I was afraid the gas would disolve it.

Thanks,
Mike

It is tapered as someone has already said so you shouldn't need anything BUT as it is an old tractor I would be inclined to wind a small amount on just to make sure, as Al says make sure you wind it on the right way or it will unwind as you screw it in.

I just replaced mine yesterday on my TO30 and I didn't use any tape and thus far it is leak free. I thought about using tape too but noticed that there is a slight taper to the threads. I guess I'll find out over time if it was needed or not.

Yes the teflon tape is what is on mine. I had a problem with mine leaking after I removed the screen in the top of the sediment bowl to clean it. The reason mine was leaking was because there is a cork gasket where the glass bowl tightens down. After 54 years I guess it had enough. I almost bought a new sediment bowl but called my local dealer and (he also sells fords)said massey ferg no longer sells the cork gasket but the ford 8n sediment bowl gasket was the same. Bought it and a new screen for about 5 bucks and no more leaks.
