TO-20 PTO Shifter

I just got my TO-20 going and mowed the yard with it yesterday.( 3-pt flail mower ) Now, three or four times while mowing, the PTO shift lever would creep forward and the PTO would become disengaged. What do I need to do to fix this? Thanks for any help.

Its somewhat unusual as most of the time its hard to get one engaged and out again on purpose. You may know this already but the PTO is engaged by pushing a shaft connected to a small shifting fork that in turns slides a collar over a gear thereby making it turn the PTO shaft. The shaft that is attached to shifting fork is the one that the lever on the side of the tractor mates with in a retaining groove. This shaft also has a ball detent with a spring load on it to keep it either in the out position or the in position. The shaft has a two grooves in it for each position so that the ball will roll into it and prevent motion. On one that is not worn this can be "felt" when the side lever is moved back and forth. The transmission shift rails have a similiar arrangement. I suspect you have a broken detent spring or a worn out detent groove. You have to take off the hydraulic lift cover to really get good access to it. Otherwise, you will have to tie the PTO shift lever down. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Keith, thanks, I will check and see if I can feel the "detents". I just had the top off-darn! Oh well, I just love this old Iron. Thanks again.
