TO-30 running problems

Wonder if you can help me figure what's up with my Ferguson TO-30? It sounds like it is missing during idling and frequently dies down like it is going to completely stop running. Its like it is running out of fuel especially when I put a load against it like letting out the clutch to move or while using an attachment like a scrapping blade or bush hog.

I have done the following (in the order I have stated) and none have fixed the problem.

1. Cleaned the fuel tank, bowl, lines to carburetor.
2. Purchased a factory rebuilt carb and it did not make a bit of difference in symptoms.
3. Replaced distributor cap, points, plugs and wires.
4. Adjusted timing to best of hearing ability (can't seem to find timing marks)
5. Replaced coil.
6. Haven't had valve cover off to look at valve movement, adjustments, ect.

Of course I was confident from the start it was a fuel problem (acting like one to me) so that's why I thought it was a float problem or so with the carb but then it has gotten into a parts changing mode where I cross my fingers that the next thing I try will correct it but it doesn't.

Do you have any ideas that may help me out?? I am at the end of my knowledge and patience with this one. Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

My email addresses are: shme4186@eclipsetel.com and shmelnm@dadebehring.com

Please reply to both so I can ensure I will get your reply.

It sounds a little like a you have a possible governor problem. The governor should keep your engine speed up when ever a load is applied to it. You may want to check its operation along with the other checks. It may be sticking or the oil may have dried and caked around it so that it can't move the governor linkeage to the carburetor. It's worth a quick look. Keep us posted. Good luck.

Keith,

I will check the governor out and WD40 it to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks

You may have an air leak around the intake manifold or inside of it. If it was external they used to put a propane torch and use unlit propane around the gasket if the engine smoothes out you have an air leak did you do a compression test on the engine?. regards

Rod,

I sprayed starting fluid (carefully) around the manifold perimeter w/o any change. I borrowed a compression gauge and will see what readings I get.

Thanks

When you say you cleaned tank did you remove the sediment bowl assembly from the tank small bits of rust can cause lots of problems in fuel delivery. also check wire where it goes in dist housing it could be chafing. It is not unheard of for the manufold to be cracked inside between. Also the air cleaner assembly is a favorite nesting site for mice and other critter. hope you get it fixed
