I have a 48 TO20. I had the clutch and pressure plate replaced 18 months ago. I was out last night bush hogging and after about an hour I noticed the tractor would barely run the Bush hog. I figured the tractor was just getting hot. So I put it away and tried agin today. Some problem. Is it possible that it has too much hyd fluid in the tractor? not enough? The dip stick shows full. OR am I way off base? I could really use your help here guys. Thanks..

You may want to check the routing of the fuel line. If it gets too close to the exhaust it can cause vapor lock. Another possibility is that your tank shutoff and/or the sediment screen is plugged. If all checks out well check the power valve setting, although that would run poorly at high throttle with the motor hot or cold.Good luck, hope you find it.

I presume when you say the tractor slows down and loses power it's not accompanied by an increase in engine revs. If it is, it's clutch slip. (by the way, to check adjustment, you should have about an inch of free play before the pedal gets resistance).
If it isn't revving up, I'd suspect fuel starvation.
Does pulling the choke give it a momentary boost? Might need more fuel from main jet, or could be crud in fuel line.

If when you open the throttle the engine revs increase but the tractor speed stays the same or slows, your clutch is slipping.
It"s either out of adjustment (no free play at pedal) or you need to split the tractor and replace it.

The engine does in fact rev up. In fact when I increase the throttle the engine runs very strong but it does not seem to transfer the power to the tranny. When I back off the throttle the tractor will actually pick up speed. The carb adjustment is good. Engine runs very well in fact, but I can't figure out why the the higher the RPM the less the tracto will move. It moves just fine with the throttle slightly over idle. Hope I'm making sense here. Thanks for all you help.

If you have 80/90wt straight mineral oil(GL1) in the hyd/trans/diff common area, and it's to the full mark, you can be sure that is not the problem. If the engine is running well with no missing or apparent slowing of RPM, that leads me to think the clutch is slipping when it gets heavy torque applied. Have you rechecked the clutch adjustment? Are you sure the engine is not overheating unnoticed. The addition of a temp gauge is a prudent expense.

Thanks for your response Ray,
Not sure how to check clutch adjustment, however I have figured out that if I increase throttle speed the tractor slows down and loses power. (with and without PTO engaged) When I back off the throttle the tractor picks up speed/power. I'm wondering if this might be a Govenor issue? The tractor was working fine, and in the middle of cutting a field , it started acting up. I am wide open for suggestion. Thanks.

I doubt the governor is the problem. Adjust the clutch using a small round bar that fits in the hole in the clutch shaft where the pedal is clamped to it. Loosen the clamp bolt on the clutch pedal, use the bar to remove the slack from the clutch by turning it clockwise until you feel the heavier resistance. Hold the bar in place and move the clutch pedal to obtain 3/16" between the pedal and the foot peg where they contact. Tighten the bolt while holding the bar pressure against the throw-out bearing and you're done. Again don't mess with the governor, it's very touchy.

Just got back into town and made the adjustment on the clutch. Thanks for all of your help. The adjust fixed the problem. I'm back in business. Thanks again!!!
