Won't start

Well, after a complete engine rebuild my TO 30 still won't start. I have check the timing and the carburator and can't come up with a reason why it will not start. I just read an old post that mention tight valves, I assume this means the rockers are set too tight. This is one area I overlooked when putting things back together. I am going to regap them tomorrow and see what that brings. When I put a little gas down the cylinders to help get things going all I got was a couple of very small attempts to start so that is why I think I may have to check the valve clearances.

Prior to the engine seizing it did run pretty good.

First off I want to thank this site for all of the help that has been offered. The archives do have an amazing amount of material to use.

Yup, I had too tight valves. I don't know why I did not adjust them when I put the rocker assembly on, I was probably too tired and wanted to get finished.

After adjusting all of the valves, with the tank off and the valve cover off I started with just the gas in the bowl. On the 5th or so crank it fired right up and ran smooth till the gas was used up. She is all back together now and ready for some spring action. The engine repair worked out okay and even though I still don't have a great hood the new paint all around looks pretty good.

Before you remove tank, etc, should be possible to check compressions turning engine by hand. Even if you"ve only got a couple of good ones, it should start. Seeing as you"ve changed the cam, make doubly sure your ign timing isn"t 180* out.

I'm presuming that you have a good fat bluish spark at the plugs, the carb is adjusted properly and is recieving fuel, the air cleaner is clear, and the timing and firing order is correct. If so, tight valves could be your problem. If you haven't got the prerequisites checked, do that before your pull the fuel tank and set the valves.

Thanks Jerry, I did all of the prerequisits to get this going. The carb had been working fine when I took it off, I did inspect it last week and run some cleaner through all of the jets and opening just in case. My spark is big and blue and I have triple checked the timing. This is why I am in such a quandry as to why it won't start. I did replace the camshaft and that is where I neglectied to reset the rockers.

I'll be pulling the tank off later, I have it down to a science now.
