The ole TO30 quit on me yesterday when I was tilling. It has been starting and running fine, but I thought I was starting to notice a miss the last couple days before it quit. As I was putting along it quit and won't start again, even if it sits. Checked gas... all good down to the carb. Checked for spark... fouled plugs, all of them were pretty carboned up. I got no spark with a paper clip in the plug wire, However I do have a visible spark at the points, which appear to be fairly new. So I am guessing the coil. Any thoughts out there?

What did the fouling on the plugs look like? Was it black, dry and fluffy? If so then your carb is adjusted too rich. If it was wet and oily, you've lost oil control at the rings. A hotter plug may help you temporarily. I'm puzzled by no spark at the sparkplug wire/paperclip. Did you hold it against a good ground? Make sure that all your ignition primary wiring is tite and brite and that the isulation is good on the primary wiring. Also check to make sure that your ignition (key) switch is ok. These quite often fail with high resistance and cause a weak or non-existant spark.

The plugs are defintely black and dry... so I suppose I am burning too rich? Do you know off hand what the mixture screws should be set for? I have the one on the side of the carb body set at 1 1/2 turns out... I think the big one on top is about the same? Also Phil(VA) said I need Autolite 3116 plugs... but the ones installed in the tractor are Autolite 386... So which should I be using? Also I did find the wire from the coil to the distributor loose and crimped a new terminal lug on that. I have it running now, but I will be picking up new points and condensor today... and maybe plugs if you fellas say I should?

There are at least two ways to get a rich mixture;too much fuel or too little air. 1-1/2 turns on the big power jet knob sounds right. I-1/2 on the idle jet is on the lean end since that controls the air through the carb at idle(the throttle is shut). Have you checked your air cleaner? When's the last time you cleaned it out? Do you keep clean oil in the cup and change it regulary? These old oil bath cleaners need attention and this is an often neglected component on these old tractors. Hope this helps you.

Well, I did check the oil bath before this last round of tilling, looked ok to me? I changed everything this afternoon. New points, condenser, cap, and plugs. Running fine now, but I do think I will try the Autolite 3116 plugs that some of the guys have suggestted. I am also considering the hot coil that they sell at this site. Should I adjust the fuel mix anyway?

Run it as is for 5 hrs then take the plugs out and read 'em. If they aren't showing signs of fouling, then leave the mixture alone. If they are fouling than lean it out 1/8 a turn and check after another 5 hrs.

When you said 'fouled' i assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that you mean fouled by oil or sludge. Since they are dry, most likely the 386 plugs are fine.

Did you say visible spark at the points? If so then make sure you change the condenser. If you haven't checked the coil resistance then make sure it is not too low or you may be running more current through the points and coil than you should. This could be hard on the points.

Get some Autolite 3116 plugs and put them in it and see if it solves the problem. If not, well you have a good set of plugs anyway, and if yours are fouled, you need them in any case. Cheaper than coil. Don't mess with Champions or anything else, if you are getting fouling.

Got it running tonight, after work today I went back to it, with an old mechanic freind. It was burned points and fouled plugs. We did manage to get it running, but I will get new points and plugs tomorrow. You said Autolite 3116 eh? I currently have Autolite 386 in there now... are they the wrong plugs?

The AL 386 is ok. I like the AL 3116 better, especially if you are getting fouling.

Could also be the rotor.
