TO-20 rocker arm bushings

Has anybody replaced the rocker arm bushings on a TO-20 ??? I need to replace the rocker shaft and put in new bushings. I was wondering if there was a trick to it or if it is fairly straight foreward. thanks jeff

I replaced the shaft and bushings on my TO-20 last year. I bought a new shaft and new bushings from Walts tractor parts which advertises on this web site. I believe the shaft was about $65 and the bushings were about $20. My shaft and bushings were very worn which caused the valve shafts to wear. If you have any wear on yours it is better to replace the shaft as it is critical to have a tight fit for your bushings are the oil will not travel the whole length of the shaft if you have a bushing with a lot of clearance where the oil can easily exit. I had a machine shop with a press remove the old bushings and press in new ones. Also, each bushing has to be checked and reamed if necessary to fit your shaft. You can not just put in new bushings and assume they will fit the shaft. I had the machine shop do this. I think they only charged me $25 to do all of the above work. All I had to do was torque it back on the head.

One additional comment that I forgot to mention in my previous message is to be careful removing the plugs on the ends of the rocker arm shafts that retain the springs. These are made of aluminum and can be damaged very easily if you are too rough with them. If they are tight use a six-point socket to remove them, not an open-end wrench, are you may round off the bolt head.
