Well, I finally installed a 12volt neg ground system on my TO-30. It cranks over great, but when I put a screwdriver in the distributor side of the coil wire I have no spark. Can someone please give some advice on what could be wrong.
Thanks
Kevin

Well I would say no power to the coil, so check the points to make sure they're making and breaking the circuit, check voltage on the supply wire to the coil, if good then the problem is downstream in the coil or the wire from the coil to the points, or the points themselves. Or a bad coil. You could check continuity across the coil. It should have some resistance, say about 3 ohms. If no voltage to coil, then check wiring all the way back. Look for loose or broken connections, broken wire, bad ignition switch, wrong connections, (hey we all make mistakes!). Just keep working backwards and it should show up.

After further investigation, it might be the ignition switch. I tried to start with the key in the off position and the starter turned over, I dont think that should happen.

Remember this starter system doesn't use a solenoid to make the battery connection to the starter. It uses the transmission safety switch. So you can have the ignition key in the off position and turn the starter over. The ignition key just opens/closes the ignition circuit and nothing more.

So, what I think you are saying is that the ignition switch might be bad and that is why I am not getting any spark?

Yeah that's right. You also seemed surprised the the starter would turn over the engine with the key in the off position.

That is possible, you can check your switch function in a minute or two with a voltmeter... or a turn signal light bulb with a couple wires leads if you don't have a meter. But I recommend following Randy's advise, checking your voltage working backwards from the coil to find the problem. There's more than one way to do a 12V conversion, Are you still using your old 6V coil with a resistor of some sort to compensate for the voltage difference, or did you install a new 12V coil?

I am using the 6 volt coil with a resistor. I put a jumper on the pos. side of the coil and the pos. side of the battery and hit the starter. The old gal fired right up. I then did it from the power side of the ignition switch and it fired right up. The wiring diagram I recieved from Tisco sure did not make much sense, so maybe something is not wired correctly.
