I resently baught a Ferguson tractor that I use as a car to get around high insurance prices here in New Brunswick, Canada.The owner told me that it is a TO-20.Since then I melted my starter to the point of no repair. I ordered one for a TO-20 and it doesn't fit. So I started doing reserch on this site and others to find out what it is. The fallowing is what I know about my Ferguson. It has an aluminum transmission housing and has s/n tag on dash that reads made in England with the serial # on bottom of tag. The s/n is 98737 with a TE outside the box infront of s/n. It has a Lucas elec system on continatal Z120 engine s/n 51756A. I can not find the date of manifacture on rearend by dip stick. My local dealer thinks its a 2085 based on the aluminum trans housing and lucas electic system,is he right?If may tractor is a TE-20 the S/N makes it a 1949,but I read in this forum that continentals stopped going in standard made TE-20's in the fall of 48. I am sure it is a continental by the oil filter being in the pan and the Z-120-600 on the left side of block.

Is it possible that its not the original motor.Does a Continantal bolt into a TE-20 standard built tractor if you take out a standard built engine?

I can find very little info on 2085's, but lots on telling apart a TO-20 and a TE-20. Did a 2085 have aluminum trans housing? Did it have Continental or standard engine or both? A 2085 is alot newer then a TE-20 isn't it?

Any help on identifing would be greatly welcome, sorry about all the writing but I wanted to give lots of info to get a positive identification so I dont have to pay return shipping on another wrong starter to the supplier (25$ each way).

You have a 1949 TE20 with a Continental engine. You are looking on the wrong side for the casting marks, they are on the side with the PTO lever, but not all the tractors have them anyway and that date code is only the date the castings were made, not the tractor.The starter from a TO20 will not fit you need a Lucas type.Last production Continental tractor was 48,000 (July 1948)but if the serial number just says TE NOT TEA then it has always been a TE20 with a Continental don't know why that should happen but nothing is impossible. The tractor was made the last week in May 1949 I have just checked the master list. A Continental would fit in place of a Standard and vice-versa but you say the serial plate says TE only which is a Continental. All TE series tractors have aluminium gearboxes. 2085's came in from 1951 tractor 172598 and 2085's have a Standard engine as all Ferguson's that are not a TE type. Over in US and Canada you normally only see TE and TEA types but there are about 15 or more versions of the TE so they are all TE series tractors with the third letter denoting what the model is but the TE was the original one. The starter you need for that tractor is Sparex part number S60354 and it requires a 1/16" shim between starter and mounting to clear the starter ring gear. You should be able to get one from this site or from your local tractor dealer to order.

Thanks I'll try my dealer with that number.
Just for future referance does a 2085 have an aluminum gear box?
Lucas electrical system?
Did they look alot different?
I read there were 200,000 or so made why is there so little info I could find on them?

I would like to have a double clutch in my TE20,did any of them have one, how about ground speed pto? If so, what parts other than clutch,pressure plate and shaft would I have to change?
I have a set of half tracks I use on it in the woods, it would be nice to have ground PTO to make a power trailer for hauling wood.

ALL TE20 series tractors had an aluminium box. You cant convert your TE tractor to live drive or ground PTO or anything, if you would like that you would be better getting a TO35 or an MF35 or an FE35, all same tractor different engines in some cases though, but they would have the things you need, just make sure you get one that is live-drive though (double clutch) There were over half a million TE20's made (of the series)and I don't know where you can be looking as there is plenty of information available for them, just remember though that the TE series was made in UK and not in US. They looked very little different, just the hood was slightly different.

If you see a cannister oil filter on a 45 angle on the L side of the block, its a Standard or TEA .
