TURF FRONT TIRES?

I have just picked up a 6 Ft finishing mower deck for my TO30, but a guy I know says that his TO20 ribbed tires cut grooves on his lawn. Is there a different tire that I can put on the tractor? Will I need to change the rims? Will I have a steering problem like Grub0927?

You should be able to get a tyre called a Multi-rib which has 10 or a dozen smaller ribs in it so it will grip but the tyre surface is basically flat so it wont mark the turf yet it will steer reasonably well, with a little practice you can use the brakes to assist the steering round without making a mark. AS one of the other writers has said you will get more turf damage from using Agricultural type tyres on the rear, you need turf type on there too.

Hello Jerry -

You may find your ribbed tires don't cause problems.

If they do, (and they did on our sod fields with typical operators!) - we've equipped most of ours with worn 205 or 215-15" radials. New 15" 6 hole implement rims fit the front axles perfectly. 225 or wider tires may rub on the steering arm assembly, depending (I think) on the offset in the implement rims.

No significant difference in steering effort, but they don't steer very well on mud!

I have the same mower setup on a TO-35. I have used it to mow my lawn (8 acres)for 15 years now,I have had no problem leaving any marks! Even if it is a little to wet to mow properly, the rear tire cleats will leave "marks" in the lawn before the 3 rib front tires will leave any marks. Good luck with your great purchase. Gregg

I HAVE ALREADY LOOKED INTO TURF TIRES FOR THE REAR, I KNOW THAT IS DOABLE. HOWEVER I WAS NOT SURE HOW TO CURE THE FRONT TIRE PROBLEM. NOW WITH ALL THE GREAT ADVICE HERE, I THINK I HAVE ENOUGH INFO TO WORK A SOLUTION. I ALSO PASSED THIS INFO AND WEB SITE TO THE OTHER FELLOW WHO MENTIONED THE PROBLEM WITH HIS TO20... SO I THINK HE IS A FAN NOW TOO. THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS!
