My 55 TO 35 has a habit of running on three cyls, and won't start unless I have it at wot with full choke, the missing I can cure by setting the plug wires away from the plugs(gives it a hotter spark) but I figure with the way it burns oil, I'm lucky to have it running on 3, sometimes it will pick up all 4, but only at above 3/4 throttle. What gets me is the starting though, last summer, even though it was only running on 3 cyls, it would start at any throttle setting with some choke. Anyone got any Ideas? Also, I think I may be going to re-build it soon, anything I should look at that won't be in a re-build kit?

evan, the rebuild kit i bought came from central tractor the only thing i didnt have was new cam bearings, mine were fine but you may want to locate some before you start so it doesnt hold you up.

Evan,
had much the same problem with my TO-20. It was the coil. At start up, most of the juice is going to the starter and the coil gets what's left. Sometimes it's not enough. I replaced the coil and and it starts like a champ. It would also start breaking down when the engine got really warm. the coil never died, but did get real sick.
Don't know for sure this is your problem, but it sure sounds familiar.
Your coil has had a whole year to get sicker than it was...they don't get better..only worse.
