TO35 with bad front end wobble

I've got my '59 TO35 restoration project back together after complete engine rebuild and complete tractor seal replacement. I took it out on the pavement for a little run out and found out it has a bad front end wobble with any speed at all.

The steering wheel has about 4 inches of play that I didn't manage to get out. I replaced the seals and o rings at the end of the sector shafts but I did not take the steering shaft and ball nut assembly out to examine it. I did find a partial broken tooth on one of the sector shafts but it did not cause the steering to bind so I didn't replace the shaft. The tooth just had the outside end broke off.

Is anyone familiar with this problem? Is there an adjustment to remove this play or will I have to remove the dash and replace the steering shaft assembly.?

Any information will be appreciated. I was hoping to start putting the loader back on today.

If it is manual steering it should have no lift in the shaft, you adjust it under the steering wheel with the Locknut's on top of the bearing under the chrome? cover. Also check the front axle pin and bush for wear, jack it up and if you see the axle sink down then there is wear that needs to be taken out. If the Radius rods are bent it will change the Castor angle on the stub axles and it will not steer properly, usual cause for Radius rods bending apart from accident is the front axle pin is worn.

The sector gears are tapered. The screws at the end opposite each shaft serve to adjust the mesh and to take outo the lash. Adjust the bottom one first with the top one loosened. That sets the mesh to the rack, then adjust the top one.

Loose steering also comes from loose drag link ends and worn spindle bearings.

Thanks Gerald J. for your quick response the adjustment took care of the wobble. The steering wheel still has a little play and that could be due to a worn shaft and ball nut assy. I have replaced all the drag links and spindle bushings.

Once again this the knowledge on this forum saves my bacon. Without this information pool I probably would have disassembled the dash and went back in to the steering box searching for a solution.

In the power steering gear box, there is a bit of endplay on the steering shaft because that's what operates the power steering valve.

Otherwise the bearings on the steering wheel shaft can wear loose in 50 years.

I find a foot on the rear end of each drag link effectively damps shimmy.
