TO35 external hydraulics

I recently noticed fluid seepage around the hydraulic lift cover (on top of the transmission housing, behind the Hi-Lo shift lever). I was advised to have the "O" rings replaced. Of course I had to have a look for myself before calling someone who actually knew what they were doing. The cover is removed easily enough (by removing two 11/16" bolts) and is attached to a tube approximately 12" long with what I presume are the leaking "O" rings (one located near each end). After detaching the tube and replacing the "O" rings, I was reinserting the tube and it drops into the transmission housing (completely out of sight, can't even see the thing now).
Q-#1: Was replacing the "O" rings the correct diagnosis for this leak?
Q-#2: Is it time to call the mechanic?

The advice given was exactly what was needed and the fix went exceptionally well(this doesn't happen to me very often).

I have a related question;
The hydraulic fluid appears to be in desperate need of replacement. Before doing this, is there anything that can be done (short of taking the transmission apart) to remove an accumulation of sludge inside, without causing damage/additional leaks (perhaps running diesel oil in it for a short period)?

Yes it was the correct thing to do, the "O" rings would have gone out of shape so did not seal properly any longer. No you don't need to call in the mechanic. Remove the right side round inspection cover and feel towards the front on that side and you should be able to find the stack pipe easily. Next time you try to fit it, put the pipe into the cover first and then lower the pipe gently down till the pipe hits the Pump below and if you keep the cover level you should be able to find the hole quite easily, then you just press the pipe into position and fit the setscrews. DON'T HAVE THE ENGINE RUNNING WHEN YOU TRY THIS

Hi Dave you can probably get the standpipe out by removing the access plate with the dipstick in it. I have never saw one of them fall past the pump they are usually on top of it. I would replace both O-rings on the stand pipe but the one causing the leak is the one in the transfer cap it's self. It is the same size as the ones used on the standpipe.
