I just recently purchased my te20 and am wondering if I will need to make one of those positioning gadgets for the three point hitch. All that I have read about these attachments seem to be for all models except the te20. Will mine stay at a given position or does it only go to the top or bottom?
Thanks,
Tom

BTW, The one item you do need if your going to mow with your tractor is an Over-riding clutch ORC for short. This is a safety devise that pervents the momentum from a mower driving the tractor forward. Yes while mowing you can dis-engage the engine and have the mower power the tractor into a tree, revine, ditch, pond etc.

They are ~$50 and available in many places.

I agree with gshadel the position control is nice to have.

Jeff explains it pretty well.
You don't need a position controller, but once you have one, you'll be hooked for life. I find it is especially usefull when trying to grade with a scraper blade.

I bought a Zane Thang back in '99 and can vouch for the quality, it installs in 5-10 minutes, been real happy with it. You can fab-up your own positioner for less $$$ if you have the time and tools. I'm a bit busy... or lazy, so the Zane Thang was right for me.

If you are thinking about using your tractor on a Bush-hog, it may be well worth reading this post that was on here last year: -

dear mister chapp. i have sold and serviced hogs for years and see this all the time. PLEASE don't take this wrong but it's a real common mistake that they are not beening mounted right.i know what your thinking how hard is it to put a hog on a tractor and go cut some grass? but!! your hog has a tail wheel right? your tractor has 2 lower lift arms right? set your hog on a 4x4 so it is level lower your tail wheel so it's on the ground. now put your tractor on but[[[[ DON'T]]] hook up the PTO with tractor running put the 3pt. control lever in the middle of the range and turn your top link so it will get longer and you will feel you 3pt. raise just a little and the stop but when you make the top link long it will raise a little more that because the control piston under the set is being pushed in and that makes you 3pt. lift untill the pressure is releasted.with a little fine tuning and a little setting of the tail wheel up or down for the height of cut you want your hog will cut at the height you want. if you have ANY questions call me i will help you set it right 1-920-446-3296 your hog should not be hanging on the tractor when your cutting but rideing on the tail wheel and the 3pt. at a set height and that is controled by your top link. good luck and if you need help call.

that is some of the trouble with hog that are not right for the tractor on fregusons you must have stiff top frame on the hog and one that don't have a sloted hole at the top. hogs are made to fit all tractors and most will work very well but some have just a little specail things that will make them work a lot better. had one in the shop on monday that the gay just got and bent the pto shaft on it the first time he used it just by lifting it. it was one with the sloted hole on top. i just filled the slot with a spacer so the top link would not move. new shaft and and repair time he was happy as kid with a new toy P.S. i did not sell or set up the hog he SAVED 85.00 by going to fleet farm but he then gave me 105.50 to fix it boy that was a real saveings

So there you are read all that and then see what you actually need. Marlowe is often on here and you can tell he knows what he is on about from what he says, so read.

Okay, Time to wade into the fray again....

Tom,

Please be advised that there are some very strong Zealots for one positioner over another. This for some reason has gotten to be an emotional topic for a lot of people.

I admit I am one of those people... However, I am a zealot for presenting all the options and letting you decide what you want... if you want it.

Bottom line you do not "NEED" a position control for you 3-pt. to work. Your 3.pt. is the same design as a 9N,2N,TO-20 and TO-30.

Whether you "NEED" a position control or not depends on what you do with your tractor. A position control is basically a simple feed-back link that moves the 3-pt. lever so that if the 3-pt. drifts down the lever is moved to command the 3-pt. up and if it drifts up then the 3-pt. is commanded down returning to the initial condition. That it all.

Now, where these things may be useful. If you use Non-ground engaging implements... i.e. bush hogs they can help maintain a fixed height to the ground. Finish mowers that are not supported by the 3-pt. but rest on the ground DO NOT need a position control.

Only you can decide if you need one or not. And that is based on what you do with your tractor and how annoying 3.pt. drift is to you. In my case I set my TE-20 and mow it does drift a little and I reset the height about every 5 to 10 minutes. If you can mow and find a good neutral position so that the bush hog does not drift too bad then your fine. (This is what I do.)

Now... There are at least 4 options if you want position control...

The above 2 discussed already are options that commercially available. Both are claimed to work and have long lists of satisfied customers.

a this option is to use check chains... i.e. hard link the height to the tractor frame. Al long list of people like this option as it removes the implement weight off the hydraulic pump.

A third option, that the guys trying to push the for sale items always fail to disclose, is a simple position control you can make if you have the least little skill.

This is the one pictured above. I have a measured drawing I will send you if you would like it. Just leave your e-mail. This concept was originally published in one of the N-club newsletters and then presented her by Rob.

Bottom line the choice is yours, use your tractor then determine if you want/need one based on your needs.

I would love to get your sketch with the measurements for the height control system for a to-20. Thanks for posting this info.

Hi Jeff-oh
Yes, I am interested in making my own system. I have a welding and fabricating shop so it should be no problem making one. Please e-mail me the drawings....they will be greatly appreciated. I was working with my tractor today and what a nice tractor. It does have some drift in the hydraulics but not real bad. I plan on picking up a finish mower for it and may do some rototilling.
Thanks again for all your help,
Tom

Hi Tom,

The TE20 does not have position control, so Yes a positioner would be a big advantage.

Tom..... ....what Phil has linked you to in Australia....and.....

Stateside, fellow in Alabama has developed a "different" type of externally mounted position control for BOTH the 9N/2N's and TE/TO's that use the Ferguson hydraulic draft scheme.

$90 (cheap) guaranteed satified ...BUT... NO PICTURES. Its too simple and he has asked for NO pictures while he is trying to patent it. Check it out..... ....Dell (WA)

Dell is correct... Zane asks for no pictures because his devise is too simple and could easily be made as it is simply two brackets and a steel rod.

The problem is that Zane will not be able to patent it as it in the public domain.
