TED 20 Gasket Leak - Cylinder Liners protruding He

Help, I have recently rebuilt a TED 20 (85mm TVO)and the Head Gasket now slightly leaks water and oil out of the sides of the engine. The Head gasket cylinder holes had also gone oval when the head was bolted down. I have checked the hight of the cylinder liners and they protrude .008 - .010" above the cylinder block face. The manual recommends .002 - .008". The liner seals were of the mild steel type and won`t press down any more (I was very careful to clean the block - liner faces before installation) What should i do? should i try to file the liner tops down carefully or use a small grinder, or should i just fit a new head gasket and hope for the best? Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Don't do that to the liners they would never be flat again if you do. You say you have steel "gaskets" well they are normally of a paper type material not steel. For the TED 85mm TVO it should be .005" - .011" (your book isn't up-to date) so from what you tell us the stand out is correct. These steel "gaskets" (part # 108024)just how they will seal I do not know, I have never used them I think they would be OK if the liners were below the block face to lift them up,but as a seal I just don't know.They were not supposed to be used for service replacements for some reason. I would prefer to use normal "figure 8" gaskets under the liners just to be sure and there were two thicknesses of them, steel sitting on steel doesn't sound too clever to me. I think that if you change the liner gaskets it should be OK then, it will certainly drop the liners a little, maybe just enough to bring them back to more normal tolerances. Just make sure the the Head gasket is the correct one too, it should not be the one with the steel inserts round the bore or that will exaggerate the problem.(that is only used if the liners are low) Both sides of this gasket should be copper.Make sure that the head and the cylinder block face is absolutely flat. See page C38 of your manual for all this detail.(if it is the genuine TE20 Manual that is)

I had the same problem couple years ago, 15-20 pds more torque fixed it.
