My first Ferguson - and questions...

After looking for a Fergie for a couple years, I rescued a poor, ugly, neglected little TO-20 from the "junk and parts" row of an equipment sale this weekend. It only took a couple hours of tinkering to get it to run. The carb badly needs overhauled, but the engine sounds surprisingly good considering the appearance of the tractor. It's got newer rear tires on it and a Sherman combo. I think I got my $700 worth.

Two questions:
1. I'm very familiar with N series Fords, but the clutch pedal arrangement is a bit different on this. The clutch pedal and shaft move, but there is no spring tension to return the pedal and the fork doesn't feel like it's moving anything. How do you adjust it? The end of the shaft sticks out past the pedal and has a hole through it. Are you just supposed to loosen the pinch bolt and change the relationship of the pedal to the shaft or am I missing some parts?

2. It's got a fairly new Zenith replacement carb on it. Anybody know where I can get a kit for it?

Thanks for the input, guys. I've got the Ferguson manual ordered. I'm going to try to do something with the clutch in the next day or so. It would be nice to get away with a pedal adjustment, but I've got a funny feeling that I'll have to end up splitting it. There is no spring tension on it whatsoever and no resistance or internal contact at all. It's just kinda sitting there on the running board. It does seem to hold, though, as I bumped the starter button while it was in gear (Oops!) and it lurched forward.
I found a source for a carb kit, but it was kinda spendy. It is varnished up pretty bad and isn't metering fuel. I'm going to try cleaning it out as-is first so I can at least see if it will run right without ether before I go spending a bunch of money on it. The cooling system is dry and I want to make sure there isn't a major engine problem there first. I'm sure I'll be full of questions.

Have you tried adjusting the pedal if the adjustment slips on the shaft it will give you same results that you say about. Only just slacken the clamp on the pedal or it will slip, then lift the pedal up and turn the shaft the opposite way to which it went when you did that, then if it works just adjust it till you get 3/8" under the footrest bracket. Worth a try before going mad and tearing it apart.

You definitely got your money's worth, just the Sherman is worth that! Your clutch is adjusted like Jerry says. I don't recall the adjustment off the top of my head and my manual isn't close. I think I used a long #3 phillips srewdriver in that hole to turn the clutch shaft, then I adjusted the clutch pedal by turning the pedal on the shaft and re-tightening the clamp bolt. Might try adjusting the clutch pedal first, turning the clutch shaft to see if you get any resistance, maybe you will get real lucky and that's all you need. Otherwise, you will be splitting the tractor to get at those 2 clutch springs inside the bell housing. I have a IT manual, but also have a Ferguson re-print manual. The IT manual is a quick reference, has some nice pictures, but the Ferguson manual is the way to go.

The clutch springs provide the return force when you release the clutch pedal. You adjust the clutch with the pinch bolt on the clutch pedal as you describe. You use a large screwdriver or a punch in the hole in the shaft to change the pedal to shaft relationship. Regarding the carb kit, you can find a kit in the parts catalog available on the left side of this page or do a Google search for tractor parts and find anoter supplier. Finally, you really need to get a Ferguson Shop Manual as well as the Parts and Owners Manual.My personal preference is not to use the IT Manuals because they are not detailed enough, however many folks on this forum find them very useful. They are cheaper but not as detailed. In the meantime, do a search for clutch adjustment in this forum.

If it"s a 24T2 Zenith carb (may or may not be) here is a diagramme of it. You can often get them opertaing well without needing a kit; they"re pretty simple.
If you do pursue a kit, note the kit doesn"t include the float, which is separate and expensive.
