After re-facing the head on my TEA-20 I'm having no luck in getting it to start. It ran well before but water was getting in the oil hence the refacing of the head.
When I placed the carby back on it leaked badly (float stuck?) so I rebuilt it with a carby kit. I have also checked and double checked the timing, electrical and compression - all OK.
Currently the carby doesn't leak if just left standing but as soon as I crank the engine for 4-5 secs trying to start it a few times fuel will start dripping from the carb. I have the max number of washers on the fuel pin valve to lower the float level as much as possible.
The only other thing is air entering from elsewhere. I have all new gaskets on the manifold and rocker cover but I don't think the rocker cover is air-tight. How important is it that the crankcase/Rocker cover area be sealed? Does the tube going from the top of the R/C to the inlet manifold play a role in the carby working correctly?
I have also yet to check the float - it floats and does not sound like it has fuel in it but I will drop it in boiling water and check for leaks just to be sure.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The breather pipe from the manifold to the rocker cover has a valve in it, can be in the "banjo bolt" on the rocker cover or in the adaptor that connects the pipe to the manifold,(depends on the age of the engine) if that is missing it will run a very weak mixture. It is like a thick washer with a pin through the middle. The rocker cover needs to be sealed or the engine will not run right at all.If you take the cover off you may find that the gasket has moved when you fastened the cover down (you will see the marks on the gasket where it has been sitting) Re. the dripping of fuel after you turn it over, it could just be the setting of the choke shaft and the spring and anchor plate, if you have it set so it doesn't move it will keep the choke on full and possibly over choke, this should really be able to move against the spring and "pulse" when the engine is turned over so it doesn't over choke itself.
