Wooden Boxings? for Ferguson Discs

Hello, An old friend of mine in northern Minnesota has a vast collection of Ferguson, even a Forage Harvester! He asked me about what he calls "wooden boxings" that are two half moon wooden spools, that are covered by two half moon steel sleeves that go between each disc. It has to do with greasing? I myself am not a tractor collector so this is how I explain it to you. He wants to know if the wooden spools are still available. For my own knowlwdge, what are they actually for?? I remember my dad many years ago replaced the wood bearings on an old Dunnum (spelling?)cullipacker and he made the bearings out of osage orange or as some call it ,hedge apple wood. I'ts harder then all get out and has some lube qualities.It is also very resestant to rot.

the part numbers for the wood bearings for a A-BO-22 lift type tandem disc are 662 155 m1 bottom and 662 156 m1 top. Howards, inc. MF dealer Mount Hope Kansas had some about a year ago. But they were kind of expencieve.

Is the forage harvester he has a side mount on? The local historical socity has one of those, as well as a baler and haylage chopper.

From what I hear, they're pretty rare.

I talked with my friend this morning and asked about his Forage Harvester because like I say, I have seen it but am not a tractor collector. It is side mounted and has a separate motor that runs the chopper. It is quite a piece of machinery to see!! He says he has 57 different pieces of Ferguson machinery which include a side mounted baler, a rotary hoe, a telescoping boom for lifting, two 7ft Dyna Balance mowers, a pull type baler, plus four tractors. He has all sorts of plows, discs, buckets, diggers etc. It is quite a collection.

I have some pictures of our Ferguson stuff if you or your friend are interested. Sure wish we had one of those stand-alone engines.

I would also be interested to see some pics of your friend's Ferguson equipment if he has any.

And I'm looking for a couple of the hitch parts if he has any spares.

Don, I don't know if you can buy new boxings or not. I had a local woodshop turn some for me for my Ferguson Disc. The old metal spools were also worn out so I made some new ones out of heavy pipe with 1/2" thick end plates on them. I took them apart last year to put some better disc blades on and a couple of the boxings were split. Just put the pieces back in and it works good. Not the same shape as the original but serves the purpose for me.

Terry, Thank you for the pictures and information. I mailed them to my friend this morning and when I talked with him he said he figured he would have to have them made. He was going to get some hard maple blocks from a neighbor and start the process of getting some made. I can see from the pictures how they work as "bearings" just like Jim said. They sound like the "bearings" that were in some early disc harrows. We had one that was probably made in the late 40s by IH. We replaced those wooden blocks every few years ourselves but we also made the blocks ourselves out of hardwood, usually oak (and that was in the 50s). I can't say that you can buy them now but we didn't then either. Jim
