Hello all,

I thought I had a TO-20, I recently removed paint from serial number tag and revealed 79249. According to this site, that makes it a TO30, right? But I have doubts, the engine number has one number missing and I don't know if it is a Z120 or Z129. The 0 or 9 has been ground off. On the serial number tag, the only part that is legible is the SN, it is on the bottom of the tag, but I examples I have seen put the SN at the top of the plate.

I only have an oil pressure guage
I air cleaner does not go through dash

What else can I check?

Matt, I asked you in your first post on this subject if the oil filter was in the pan or external on the side of the engine, and you didn"t reply. A good start would be to tell us that. The TO-30 has the oil filter external, unlike the 20.

Then it isn't a Z129, and therefore it isn't a TO-30 (or if it is, it has wrong engine). The Z120 on the TO-20 has filter in the pan.

So it appears I may have a TE with possible bigger pistons. Acording to the dating near the rear axle by fluid check, it was made in 51.

I think I"ll call it a TE-29.5

I used it heavily today, no problems except the occasional root.

thank all

If the the gearbox housing made of aluminium it is a TE series if it is a cast iron box it is a TO series. if its just got a big round plate on the oil pan its a Z120 - TO20 or TE20. If you have an external oil filter, if you have its a Z129 = TO30

So on the SN tag, is the SN at the top or bottom of plate. Maybe I have a fake SN tag?

Any idea why someone would take the time to grind off a number on the engine?

I am aware of five external physical differences between the 20 and the 30. Three have been mentioned (dash air inlet for the TO-30; external oil filter for the TO-30, Z120 marking vs Z129 marking on the engine for the TO-30). A fourth, I think, is in the casting for the rearend. In the picture, you can see a vertical hump or raised portion from top to bottom under the auxilary hydraulic tap on the right side. I am not sure, but I do not believe that the earlier tractors have this. A fifth is that earlier tractors (but not all of the later TO-20s) had the transmission cover as an integral part of the steering box casting (all one piece). ONly the later TO-20s but all of the TO-30s had the stamped steel cover.

Hope this helps. If you want a bigger picture, look at the same link but remove the "-small" from the picture name of the link

All TO-20"s have the seperate shift plate cover pointed out by Jim and shown in the picture. If the plate is integral with the steering column then it is a TE-20 from the Coventry, England plant.

Another possibility is that it a replacement Engine on a TO-30. In the past a Z120 could have been put on the TO-30 frame and the last number ground out to cover the fact.
