Hello all,

I have a TO-20 and am trying to replace the old weathered steering wheel. I have the top nut off and the washer removed. I have tried loosening the bottom nut under the steering wheel but it doesn't seem to have an effect on removing the steering wheel.

Do I just beat it off?, do I have to be careful about damaging the steering?

any suggestion are much appreciated.

Thanks

Matt

I asked a mechanic to take the old wheel off my MF35. He tried various things and finally used a cutting torch. It did a great job.

Matt...sorry I didn't read this sooner. You've probably got it off by now. If not...loosen the nut, replace with a standard nut if you can. Place your knees under the wheel pushing it upward. Place the round end of one ball peen hammer in the center of the shaft. Strike it sharply with another ball peen(slightly larger). May take several whacks, but it's the best way I've found to remove any swedged wheel. Good luck, have fun!! Mike. PLEASE!!! if this isn't clear let me know.

On my 35, it sounds like the same setup, I used a small bearing splitter under the wheel tightened just about to the shaft, and a steering wheel puller on top with the arms pulling on the bearing splitter, and the shaft against the steering shaft. Then tighten it up and the wheel came off. Soaked it real good with penetrating oil for a few days before hand.

If the old wheel is scrap, you can't get much easier than a small air chisel. Position the blade under the wheel centre pointing upwards. A pull on the trigger and it should pop off. If you're going to keep the wheel and don't have a propper steering wheel puller (this is not just a three legged puller, it has legs at right angles to normal and a maximum width adjuster, although maybe you could use a bearing seperator?), use a dead blow hammer to belt it off. Be careful, I have managed to bend the main steering shaft with one of these before...

Whenever using a puller to remove something stuck like a steering wheel, always leave the nut on, albeit loosened off a few turns - saves accidents & also protects thread from potential damage. If a lot of pressure is needed, domed nut should be replaced with plain one so it doesn't get crushed. If you use an hydraulic puller don't get carried away - 10tons will destroy most steering wheels!
Have fun.

I had a friend help me,I sprayed it good with pb blaster or wd40,we ended up using a 2x4, about 4 feet long and wedged it under the wheel the best we could and pryed the wheel off,one of us would pry with the 2x4 and the other would be on the tractor pulling up at the same time,we finally got it off,it wasn't easy,i sprayed it good for 2 days and let it sit on there for couple days then we got to removing it,if you are the guy on the tractor pulling up on the wheel be careful cause when it comes off it comes off fast, also with the nut still on you could give it a wack to try to break it loose

If you can get hold of a steering wheel puller it will make the job much easier, they stick on the taper on the shaft. The nut underneath has nothing to do with holding the wheel on it is part of the top bearing. if you get the puller tighten it up so the load in on it quite hard then hit the top of the puller screw and it will shock it loose, as the other correspondent said, keep out of the way when it does come off.
