Starter motor on TEA-20

I"m having some trouble working out what is wrong with the starter motor (12v stub nose type) on the TEA-20. At first it had trouble engaging the ring gear, every now and then it would just whirr, but on subsequent tries it would engage and start. Now it just whirrs and never engages. I have checked the ring gear and it is in good condition. I have pulled the starter apart, cleaned and checked then replaced with no improvement.
There is a brass/copper plate (clutch?) between the armature shaft and the engagement gear that the armature shaft will turn on if I hold the engagement gear and rotate.
The starter is not the same type as described in the manual (with the clutch sticking out the end) but it certainly isn"t a modern starter. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I had the same problems earlier and the solution was to fix og check the wiring from battery to starter.

Obviously the tractor has been converted from a 6volt type. The starter pinion should not turn by hand without turning the shaft.It would appear that this "clutch" is slipping. If you write to me at: - fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk I will send you some instructions from the service manual that applies to the 6volt starter but it should be the same otherwise.Just tell me again what you need as I won't have this email to hand.
