I,ve just finished restoring a TED20 that was last used 25 years ago. Everything was working correctly then apparently. But I cant get the link arms to lift or lower.(they move up and down by hand very easily) The control valve was sticking in pump but have freed this. no difference. PTO shaft is spinning so pump is spinning presumably. Have slackened off both bolts on top of pump valves but no oil seems to come out the top of them. The only thing that doesn't seem quite right is that the quadrant lever feels like its not very free, even though the valve is moving. Has anyone got any ideas please. Many thanks. Kevin

Does the pump get up to pressure or not?
is there oil leaking down from the top or swirling in the bottom, sign of a leak. I have written before but not had a reply. So I assume you are now OK?

Guys, can you tell me which is the good choice of hydraulic oils for the TO30s? MF says I need there brand due to viscosity and antifoam. I thought all hyd. oils had anti foam in them. They say there brand (sorry I can't recall the #) Is thicker to make the pump run better. I have a newly rebuilt pump and it drifts. When using the plow it is hard to maintain a depth, same when using the blade. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. Eric

Not maintaining depth is probably nothing to do with the oil unless there is something really weird about it. The problem will be setting up the Control spring and the Hydraulic Quadrant, this is the important thing. If you would like an instruction sheet on how to do this mail me at:-

and I will send you one, just let me know the symptoms again when you do mail and I will write out more instructions for you and tell you the oil grade too

Is the pump actually running, it should be if the PTO shaft is turning at the rear of the tractor, don't assume that it will be just because it is in gear though. Check that the Control Valve is attached to the bottom of the long control fork in the bottom of the oil. Turn off the engine and reach down the fork into the oil and check if the cross-bar on the valve is actually located in each leg of the fork, if it isn't you will have to spread the two legs to get the bar between. If you can't do it through the side covers you will have to drain the oil out and try through the big oil drain plug under the pump. You say no oil comes out of the chamber caps when you slacken them off, to me it looks as though the control valve is not in the lift position, so possibly not attached to fork. When you say the quadrant lever doesn't seem free, are you sure its not just the friction disc at the bottom tight with being stood for so long.If you want pictures or information on how to do it email me at: - fergusontractors at tiscali dot co dot uk

Have you tried reaching in the side ports and moving the linkage between the quadrant control lever and the control valve by hand? One possibility is the the pressure relief valve is stuck open. You should be able to tell by seeing whether the hydraulic fluid is swirling around in that area when the pump is running.
