I've got a 1952 TO-30 and I have always wondered why I cant downshift at any rpm above an idle? Is this normal for my tractor, or might there be a problem? I rebuilt the clutch several years ago but its been this way as long as I can recall.

To downshift while the tractor is moving, ya hafta learn to double clutch. It takes a little practice to get the hang of it, but you can probably learn it. It's a matter of synchronizing the speed of the tractor with the engine RPMs for the gear you are shifting down to. If you just push the clutch once and then try to downshift, the clutch plate stops. Then it won't go into any gear as long as there is still forward motion. The clutch plate must be spinning at the proper speed to mesh the gears. When you want to downshift on the go, push the clutch pedal, shift to nuetral, release the clutch pedal for a second or two, then push the clutch pedal again, (by this time the tractor has slowed down some) then shift into the lower gear. Another method (which I use every day in an 18 wheeler with 10 gears) is to push the clutch pedal, shift to neutral, release the clutch, then as the tractor slows down, gently ease it into the lower gear. The operative word here is "gently". I also use this method on my 8N.
